A positive step on “Fracking”
Recently Governor Martin O'Malley took an important step by issuing an executive order to establish a task force to study the effects of Hydro-fracturing or "fracking", the process used to extract Natural Gas from Marcellus Shale in Western Maryland.
The potential for environmental damage from "fracking" was the subject of unsuccessful legislation we worked to pass in Annapolis this past General Assembly Session. This legislation was introduced because of concern that the full effects of the fracking process on the environment are not well known. The process uses a large amount of water as well as chemicals to break rocks to access natural gas.
The Maryland General Assembly Legislative Session ended on April 11, 2011 and as always, the Maryland LCVEF, along with our partners in the environmental community, worked to protect our Air, Land and Water. Here are the issues we worked on:
Thank you for all your work this session, your emails, phone calls, visits, and attendance at the environmental summit helped us pass laws to protect our air land and water. We couldn't have done it without you!
