Make tax-free charitable gifts directly from your Retirement Account

If you are age 70½ or older, you can make tax-free charitable gifts of up to $100,000 per year directly from your IRA to eligible charities, such as the Maryland LCV Education Fund. These contributions are known as Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD).

If you are age 72 or older, you must make withdrawals from your IRA each year. Charitable gifts to the Maryland LCV Education Fund can help satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD) while avoiding the potential negative tax consequences that regular IRA withdrawals in retirement can create. The contribution must be made directly from a traditional IRA account by your IRA administrator. Donating IRA assets can be a financially rewarding strategy for both you and the Maryland LCV Education Fund.

The general requirements related to the Qualified Charitable Distributions are as follows:

  • The QCD must come from a Traditional or Inherited IRA. So, you can’t use a 401(k) but you can rollover the 401(k) into an IRA and then make the QCD.
  • You must be at least 70½ years old.
  • The distribution must go directly to a qualified charity. You cannot pay the funds to yourself and then write a check to the charity. Most brokerage accounts will provide you with a checkbook so you can write the check directly from the IRA account.
  • You must receive a confirmation letter from the charity that states no goods or services were received in exchange for the contribution (Maryland LCV Education Fund will gladly send this letter to you upon making a QCD gift).

Please consult with your financial representative or tax adviser before making a decision that alters your tax situation and make sure a QCD makes sense for your circumstances. The information here is not intended as legal or tax advice and is subject to federal and state tax laws and may change.

Please contact Laura Wood at 410-280-9855 x205 or via email at lwood@mdlcv.org if you would like your gift to Maryland LCV Education Fund to be used for a specific purpose.
